enlightening the parliament was an art and art education project developed by the Institute of Fine Arts at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig (HBK) on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Lower Saxony State Parliament. The project explored the relationship between art, democracy and public participation and transformed the space in front of the parliament into a temporary site for dialogue and artistic intervention.
My role focused on the graphic design and visual communication of the project, at the intersection of design and art education. I developed the visual system for the project website, the interactive question box, the thematic question cards and the large-format banners for the projection towers. This required a visual language that could function simultaneously in the urban public space, in printed materials and in digital communication.
The 53 question cards translated complex questions concerning democracy and political participation into accessible visual and textual formats. The design used a reduced geometric language and abstract forms to create a low-threshold point of entry into political and social questions. The cards were conceived not simply as information carriers, but as tools for participation and conversation.
The large-scale banners formed the visual framework for the light projection on the parliament building. The installation combined projected images of the building with video statements from citizens, citizens’ councils and members of parliament. At the same time, a sound installation and an art education project invited passers-by to contribute their own perspectives on democracy.
The project therefore brought together graphic design, participatory art education, public space and political discourse. My contribution demonstrates how visual communication can operate not only as representation but as a mediating and participatory instrument within artistic and civic contexts.

enlightening the parliament war ein Kunst- und Kunstvermittlungsprojekt des Instituts FREIE KUNST der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig (HBK) anlässlich des 75-jährigen Bestehens des Niedersächsischen Landtages. Das Projekt untersuchte das Verhältnis von Kunst, Demokratie und gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe und verwandelte den öffentlichen Raum vor dem Landtag temporär in einen Ort des Dialogs und der künstlerischen Intervention.
Meine Aufgabe lag in der grafischen Gestaltung und visuellen Kommunikation des Projekts an der Schnittstelle von Design und Kunstvermittlung. Ich entwickelte das visuelle System für die Projektwebsite, die interaktive Fragenbox, die Themenkarten sowie die großformatigen Banner für die Projektionstürme. Dabei musste eine Gestaltung entstehen, die gleichermaßen im öffentlichen Raum, in gedruckten Medien und in der digitalen Kommunikation funktioniert.
Die 53 Fragenkarten übersetzten komplexe Fragen zu Demokratie und politischer Beteiligung in niedrigschwellige visuelle und sprachliche Formate. Eine reduzierte geometrische Formsprache und abstrakte Symbole eröffneten einen unmittelbaren Zugang zu politischen und gesellschaftlichen Fragestellungen. Die Karten waren dabei nicht lediglich Informationsträger, sondern wurden als Instrumente der Beteiligung und des Dialogs konzipiert.
Die großformatigen Banner bildeten den visuellen Rahmen für die Lichtprojektion auf dem Landtagsgebäude. Die Installation verband Innenansichten des Gebäudes mit Videostatements von Bürger:innen, Bürger:innenräten und Abgeordneten. Parallel ergänzten eine Klanginstallation und ein Kunstvermittlungsprojekt im öffentlichen Raum das Format und luden Passant:innen dazu ein, eigene Perspektiven auf Demokratie einzubringen.
Das Projekt verband damit Grafikdesign, partizipative Kunstvermittlung, öffentlichen Raum und politischen Diskurs. Meine Arbeit zeigt, wie visuelle Gestaltung über reine Repräsentation hinaus als vermittelndes und partizipatives Instrument in künstlerischen und gesellschaftlichen Kontexten eingesetzt werden kann.
